Short Story Writing in English — With Hints and Moral

Story writing is a creative English writing task where you develop a narrative — either freely or from given hints (keywords or a story outline). A good story has a clear beginning, middle, and end, with at least one character, a conflict, and a resolution. School exam stories usually end with a moral.

How to Write a Story from Hints

GIVEN HINTS: A boy — lost in a forest — heard a sound — found an injured bird — took it home — nursed it back to health — bird guided him home

STORY FROM HINTS:

Title: A Friend in the Forest

Rohit was a curious twelve-year-old who loved to explore the woods behind his village. One afternoon, he wandered too deep into the forest and realised with a sinking heart that he was lost. Every tree looked the same, and the sun was beginning to set.

As panic crept in, he heard a soft, pitiful sound from behind a bush. Pushing aside the branches, he found a small sparrow with an injured wing, lying on the forest floor. Rohit gently wrapped the trembling bird in his handkerchief and placed it carefully in his shirt pocket, promising to find help.

Something unexpected happened next. The sparrow, though injured, seemed to sense Rohit's need. It began chirping insistently and fluttering in one direction. Trusting the small creature, Rohit followed — and within twenty minutes, the familiar edge of the forest came into view.

Rohit carried the bird home and nursed it for two weeks, feeding it grain and water. When it was fully healed, he opened the window and let it fly free. As it soared into the sky, Rohit felt a warmth in his chest that no words could describe.

Moral: Kindness given freely always finds its way back to you.

Title: The Greedy Farmer

Once upon a time, a poor farmer lived in a small village. One morning, he found a goose in his yard that laid a golden egg every day. The farmer sold the eggs at the market and soon grew quite wealthy. But greed slowly crept into his heart. 'Why wait for one egg a day?' he thought. 'If I cut open the goose, I will get all the eggs at once!'

He killed the goose — and found nothing inside. Not a single golden egg. The goose was dead, and so was his daily source of wealth. The farmer sat in his empty yard, surrounded by his belongings but filled with regret.

His neighbour, a wise old woman, shook her head. 'You had enough to live comfortably for life,' she said. 'But enough was never enough for you.'

The farmer had nothing left but his lesson.

Moral: Greed destroys what patience builds.
