India is universally known as the land of massive, colorful festivals. From Holi to Eid to Christmas, every festival brings extreme joy, sweet food, and school holidays.
However, if I had to choose one, my absolute favourite festival is Diwali, the glorious Festival of Lights.
Other Name: Deepavali (Meaning: A row of glowing lamps).
Core Theme: The ultimate victory of Good over Evil.
Key Activities: Cleaning the house, lighting diyas, making rangoli, eating sweets.
Environmental Note: Today, many students celebrate a 'Green Diwali' by completely avoiding loud, highly polluting firecrackers.
Diwali is celebrated with massive enthusiasm in every corner of India. I love this festival because it completely transforms the dark, cold nights of November into a magical wonderland of glowing diyas (clay lamps) and beautiful fairy lights. The entire city looks like it is dressed in gold. It is a time when families forget all their anger, come together, and celebrate the pure victory of light over deep darkness.
The massive preparations for Diwali start weeks in advance. My mother cleans the entire house until it sparkles. On the main day, my sister and I draw beautiful, colorful Rangoli patterns at the front door to welcome Goddess Lakshmi. In the evening, we wear our brand-new traditional clothes and perform the sacred Puja. After the prayers, the real fun begins! We eat massive boxes of delicious sweets (like Kaju Katli and Laddoos) and exchange gifts with our neighbors.
Diwali is not just about eating sweets. Historically, it marks the massive, triumphant return of Lord Rama to the city of Ayodhya after defeating the evil demon king Ravana and completing 14 years of harsh forest exile. It teaches us a very powerful lesson: no matter how strong the evil or darkness seems, the truth and the light will always eventually win.
My favourite festival is Diwali because it brings my entire family together, fills the entire city with beautiful lights, and spreads massive happiness and positivity.
It is celebrated to honor the historic return of Lord Rama, Goddess Sita, and Lakshmana to Ayodhya after killing Ravana.
