The chapter 'The Adventures of Toto' from the CBSE Class 9 English 'Moments' textbook is a highly amusing and funny story written by the legendary Indian author Ruskin Bond. It revolves around the chaotic actions of a very mischievous baby monkey named Toto.
The very first event in the story is how this chaotic monkey ended up in the narrator's house.
Author: Ruskin Bond.
Main Animal: Toto (A highly mischievous red baby monkey).
Previous Owner: A local tonga-driver.
Purchase Price: Exactly Five Rupees.
Grandfather's Motivation: He felt pity seeing the beautiful monkey tied up miserably.
The narrator's Grandfather was a massive animal lover who maintained his own private zoo at home (which already contained a tortoise, rabbits, and a goat). One day, Grandfather was walking in the market when he saw a beautiful, bright-eyed little red monkey named Toto. Toto was tied to a feeding trough by a local 'Tonga-driver' (horse-cart driver). Because Toto was tied up, he looked completely out of place, miserable, and depressed. Grandfather felt intense pity for the beautiful animal.
Unable to leave the miserable monkey tied up, Grandfather decided on the spot that he had to add Toto to his private zoo. He negotiated with the tonga-driver and officially bought Toto for the sum of five rupees.
When Grandfather brought Toto home, he realized a massive problem: Grandmother absolutely hated it whenever Grandfather brought home a new bird or animal. Therefore, Grandfather and the narrator decided to keep Toto's arrival a strict secret. They locked the monkey inside a little closet that opened into the narrator's bedroom wall until Grandmother was in a good mood. Naturally, the mischievous Toto immediately destroyed the closet, tearing the wallpaper and shredding the narrator's school blazer into ribbons!

Grandfather was a massive animal lover. He felt that the beautiful, bright-eyed monkey looked completely out of place tied up, and believed he would be much happier in a private zoo.
It was kept secret because Grandmother always fussed and became highly angry whenever Grandfather brought home any new animals or birds.
