Essay on Female Foeticide (A Social Evil)

Female Foeticide is the illegal practice of determining the sex of an unborn child using ultrasound technology and deliberately aborting the foetus if it is found to be a girl. Despite modern education and economic progress, this regressive practice remains a dark stain on our society.

The Causes: The root cause of female foeticide in India is deep-seated patriarchy. Many families still view a male child as an asset who will carry forward the family name and earn money. Conversely, a female child is viewed as an economic burden, primarily due to the illegal but heavily practiced Dowry system, where families are forced to pay huge sums of money at the time of a daughter's marriage. Lack of education and regressive mindsets further fuel this crime.

The Consequences: The mass killing of female foetuses has led to a severely skewed Sex Ratio in India (fewer women per 1000 men). This demographic imbalance leads to increased crimes against women, human trafficking, and severe societal instability.

The Solution: To combat this, the Indian Government enacted the PCPNDT Act (Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act), making it a criminal offence for doctors to reveal the sex of a foetus. Furthermore, initiatives like 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao' aim to empower girls through education and financial schemes.

However, laws alone cannot solve the problem. True change will only happen when society changes its mindset. We must stop viewing daughters as a burden and realize that a nation can never truly progress if it kills its mothers, sisters, and daughters before they are even born.
