The Communication Process: Diagram and Elements

Communication is not just about talking; it is a systematic process of exchanging information, ideas, and feelings between two or more people. In business studies and networking, this is represented by a standard model known as the Communication Process.

Key Facts

Communication is considered incomplete until 'Feedback' is successfully received by the sender.

This model applies universally to human-to-human communication, human-to-computer communication, and computer network data transfers.

1. The 7 Elements of the Process

The process flows sequentially through these key components:

  1. Sender: The person who has an idea and wishes to share it.
  2. Encoding: The sender converting the idea into a format that can be understood (words, symbols, pictures, or binary data).
  3. Message: The actual physical or digital content being sent (the email, the spoken sentence, the letter).
  4. Channel (Media): The pathway or medium through which the message travels (e.g., telephone wire, air/voice, internet).
  5. Receiver: The person or machine to whom the message is targeted.
  6. Decoding: The receiver interpreting and trying to understand the encoded message.
  7. Feedback: The receiver's response sent back to the sender, confirming the message was understood.

2. Noise in Communication

There is a hidden 8th element called Noise. Noise represents any barrier or interruption that distorts the message during the process.

  • Examples: Static on a phone line, bad internet connection, language barriers, or physical background noise.
