In Class 12 Business Studies (Principles of Management), the Scalar Chain is one of the 14 fundamental principles introduced by the French management theorist Henri Fayol.
Imagine a triangle. The Scalar Chain travels up the sides of the triangle. The Gang Plank is a horizontal line cutting directly across the middle of the triangle to save time.
Scalar Chain is the formal line of authority and communication that flows from the highest level of management (CEO/President) down to the lowest level (workers) in an organization.
According to Fayol, all communications and orders must strictly follow this chain. No one should skip a level. If 'A' is the boss, 'B' is the manager, and 'C' is the clerk, then C must communicate with B, and B will communicate with A.
Fayol realized that following the scalar chain strictly can cause severe delays during an emergency. To solve this, he introduced the concept of the Gang Plank. It is a shorter route that allows two employees of the same level in different departments to communicate directly with each other in an emergency, without going up and down the scalar chain (provided they inform their immediate superiors).
If the scalar chain is ignored, there will be chaos, lack of accountability, and communication gaps. Subordinates might receive conflicting orders from different bosses.
