Life Cycle of Entamoeba Histolytica

The parasite exists in three distinct morphological stages:

1. Trophozoite: The active, feeding, and disease-causing stage. It lives in the wall of the large intestine and aggressively eats host tissues and red blood cells.
2. Precystic Stage: A non-feeding, spherical intermediate stage as the parasite prepares to leave the host.
3. Cyst Stage (Tetranucleate Cyst): The infective, dormant stage. It has a tough outer wall that protects it from harsh environmental conditions.

• Infection: A human consumes food or water contaminated with mature, tetranucleate cysts (often spread by houseflies from human feces).
• Excystation: In the small intestine, the cyst wall dissolves due to digestive juices, releasing a small amoeba that divides into eight tiny trophozoites.
• Multiplication: These migrate to the large intestine, mature, multiply rapidly via binary fission, and invade the intestinal lining, causing severe bleeding and ulcers.
• Encystation: Some trophozoites turn back into hard cysts and are passed out in the human feces, ready to infect the next victim.
